The Luggage Nightmare: Make Shoes Your Friend Filed under:
Travel, Travelling Tips on

|
When you pack for your holiday, what is the first thing you place in your suitcase? The chances are that it is your shoes. People usually pack their shoes first because these are the heaviest and bulkiest items we take, but are also absolutely essential, unless of course you intend to spend the whole of your holiday sat on your beach.
However, shoes do take up lot of room, and a little extra thought can help to not only reduce the amount of space they take up, and the weight that they necessarily involve, but also using shoes as a storage medium themselves. Of course, depending on where you are going on your holiday you will need to take a different number and different type of shoe with you. Clearly if you are intending on spending your holiday on a hiking expedition, a good pair of sturdy walking boots will be absolutely essential, whereas a beach holiday will require little more than a comfortable pair of sandals.
The best advice for reducing the size and weight of the shoes in your luggage is to wear on the journey the heaviest pair of shoes that it will be necessary for you to take, such as your hiking boots. Although this may not be the most comfortable of shoes to wear, it may be possible during the journey to take them off completely, and it will certainly mean that your luggage is far easier to handle.
Generally, being realistic about it, a durable but comfortable pair of sturdy shoes, one pair of smart shoes and a pair of comfortable sandals or the equivalent is all that is necessary for most people going on holiday. Be realistic therefore when packing about how many shoes it is really necessary for you to take. Two pairs of trainers is not a sensible way of packing. So, with your heaviest pair of shoes on you, you might be able to get away with just two pairs of shoes in your baggage.
The next thing to think about Is how to use these shoes in your packing to help, rather than hinder, the amount of space that you have available to you. The first way of helping to improve the situation is to completely undo the shoes, possibly removing the laces entirely. This will allow the shoes to be more flexible and manoeuvrable. The next step is to find small objects and squashable objects which can be pushed right the way into the shoes. This is certainly easier if the shoe has been undone completely. Often, socks or small toiletry items are ideal, and can be slipped inside the shoe, making full use of the volume of space that would be otherwise wasted.
So, by thinking carefully about the number of shoes that you really need to take, about the type of shoes that will be necessary, and by wearing your heaviest shoes, you need only make sure you take full advantage of the packing space available in the remaining shoes to reduce the overall size and weight of the footwear nightmare.

How To Halve Your Luggage Easily Filed under:

Imagine for a moment that you could reduce the size and weight of you luggage by half. Consider just how much easier it would be without the heavy cases and bags. Perhaps it might even mean that you could do without a suitcase and just have a carryon bag that could be kept with you at all times. That would certainly speed up the whole process at the airport.
It isn’t too difficult to put this into practice, but it does need a little more planning than the average holidaymaker tends to carry out. There are three simple stages that are required in order to achieve this considerable reduction.
The first step is to consider the actual case or bag you are planning on using. If you automatically head straight for your largest suitcase, then mentally you will be collecting together and packing the quantity of items which will fill it. You will allow yourself all the extra luxuries that you wouldn’t take if you didn’t have such a monumental volume of space. So, instead, try to limit yourself to a small suitcase, a holdall or carryon bag. Once you start to plan to use a smaller bag, you will find yourself thinking along much tighter lines, and as a result, your luggage will immediately begin being reduced in your head.
The second stage is to think about clothing, since this is what tends to take up most of the space in the average tourist’s luggage. People often think about combinations of clothes they usually wear, yet this may require you packing items which can only really go with one or two other items of clothing, or requiring you to take a very bulky or easily damaged item of clothing. Instead, think about clothing that won’t damage by being rolled up tightly, and think about the weight and size of each item. For example, woollen clothes are very bulky, whereas cotton is much less so. Rather than a big bulky woollen jumper, a couple of layered cotton tops with a light jacket will prove just as warm, more flexible with use, and far smaller and lighter to carry. In fact, you are taking more clothes, with more possible combinations, yet taking up less space and weighing far less!
The third thing to consider is your toiletries. Very often people just hurl the cans and bottles they use each day into their case. These bottles are usually very large, and sometimes much of their volume is empty space! Instead, buy a set of small, tester sized bottles with screw caps, and transfer your toiletries into these, not forgetting to label them all. By doing this, you will find that most of your toiletries will fit into the space in your shoes, thereby saving you a tremendous amount of space. The liquids and gels in toiletries are very heavy, and by reducing the number and volume of these you will save considerably.
These are the three top tips to reducing your luggage, and put into honest practice it really is possible to halve the amount you take. But, it does require planning and preparation. The further in advance you plan to be more economical, the more successful you are likely to be.

Traveling With Pets: Six Road Trip Tips For Your Furry Friends Filed under:

Traveling with pets is a growing trend and can be a pleasant experience for both you and your pet if you plan ahead. Family pets are often a big part of the family, and sometimes it’s hard to leave those adorable faces behind when you leave town. Failing to carefully plan a road trip with your pet can lead to an endurance ride of hourly stops, nonstop whining and barking as well as a lack of pet-friendly places to stay. By using the internet for researching and planning, you can be assured that your vacation will be pleasurable and relaxing for everyone.
Here are a few things to consider when traveling with your pet:
1. Temperament: Make certain that your four-legged pal enjoys traveling before taking him on a long trip. Take time during the weeks leading up to your vacation to take him on several short trips so that he will be more accustomed to the sights, smells and sensations of riding in a car. If your pet is aggressive, ill-mannered or simply terrified of traveling, you may want to consider a qualified pet sitter or reputable boarding facility.
2. Manners: It is only proper and responsible that you to make sure that your pet will be a welcomed guest at your destination. You may be a sight for sore eyes for your favorite aunt, but your dog or cat may not be! Make certain that your pet is well-behaved and if you have a dog, make sure that he understands basic commands before going on you trip. Take along some favorite toys to make sure that your pet doesn’t become bored and find destructive ways to entertain himself with.
3. Medical Needs: If you’re going away for a long trip, or if your pet is chronically ill, take it to the vet for a pre-vacation check-up. Make certain that all vaccinations are up to date and take the proper documentation with you. In the unlikely event that your pet gets into a fight or bites someone during your trip, you’ll want documentation that the pet has had its shots. Your vet may prescribe your pet a mild sedative or suggest a safe motion sickness remedy if your pet has suffered in the past. It’s also advisable to obtain the names of a couple of veterinarians at your destination just in case of emergency.
4. Accommodations: As more people take to traveling with pets, more and more hotels are catering to pet travelers. By using the search term “pet-friendly” in your query, you will receive a wealth of information about pet-friendly accommodations and destinations, RV parks, dog parks, beaches and campgrounds. Major online travel agencies, like Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz, allow you to limit your hotel search results to only those who allow pets.
5. Safety: When traveling with pets it is important to ensure their safety and not to do anything that could put them in danger. Always have your dog or cat on a leash and never allow a pet to roam freely in the vehicle, as it could get tangled around the driver’s feet or get in the driver’s sight of the road. Always crate your dog or cat in a sturdy, well-ventilated carrier big enough for them to stand up and turn around in comfortably. It’s a good idea to get them used to the crate a few weeks prior to departing. Also be sure to have collars and I.D. tags for your pets in the event that they become separated from you. Investing in a microchip may also be something to consider if your pet has a tendency to get loose.
6. Food, Water and Potty Breaks: Pack food and water bowls and avoid chances of stomach upset by packing an adequate supply of your pet’s regular brand of food. Switching pet food under any circumstances can cause abdominal distress and can be extremely unpleasant for all concerned, especially while confined in a car! Stick to their regular feeding routine and give the main meal at the end of the day or when you reach your destination. Traveling with pets can also lead to dehydration so it’s important to stop frequently not only for potty breaks and exercise, but also to let them get a fresh drink of water. Make sure to keep a supply of “doodie” bags handy so you can comply with local ordinances when necessary.
Preparing in advance for traveling with pets and keeping its best interests in mind on the road will help make it an enjoyable trip for everyone.

How to Book Meet and Greet Parking Effectively Filed under:

Over the last two years chauffeur parking and valet parking, otherwise know as meet and greet parking has received a lot of bad press. This article explains what should be done in order to ensure, if using this type of service, your vehicle is looked after in the way that is expected and paid for.
Meet and greet parking is a system of parking that allows the customer a stress free way to park their vehicle when travelling from an airport. Instead of the traditional park and ride facility whereby the customer drives direct to the car park and is transported to the terminal on a transport coach, they drive direct to the airport terminal and have their car collected. Upon the customers return their vehicle is waiting for them where they left it. Hassle free and no waiting for transfer coaches. Just simply walk outside jump in your vehicle and off you go.
All sounds good doesn’t it? It’s what happens next that can be worrying for the customer. It has been documented that some car parks can be up to and more than 10 miles away from the airport thus putting up to 20 miles onto the cars mileage.
Ask yourself this question. Is the car park where your vehicle is being kept secure enough? Is the driver insured to drive your vehicle? Is your vehicle actually being stored in a car park or on the side of a road?
All very scary and will no doubt put you off using such a service. Unfortunately there are operators out there who cannot answer the above questions satisfactorily and should be avoided at all costs. It is these operators that have given valet parking a bad name. Chauffeur parking is an excellent service and should not be forgotten about. With prices coming down everyday it is still worth using this type of service, and with a little bit of care you can find an excellent provider. Below is a brief guide on how to find a reputable meet and greet provider.
The Right Meet and Greet provider
1 Use a comparison site – Comparison sites have more than one car park available and usually research their car parks before allowing them to advertise on their site.
2 Always check the more info pages on a site – All reputable comparison sites should have more information on all the car parks that they advertise. These details should include such things as security details, insurance details, disabled facilities and more. If there are not any more info pages you should avoid the site.
3 Look for review pages – Reviews are always useful to find out what other people thought about each car park.
4 Do not just book on price – This might sound ridiculous but the cheapest car park is not always the best. Ensure you take on board all of the above when making your choice.
5 Ask Questions – Email the company and ask questions about insurance and security details. Any reputable company will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
6 Make sure your vehicle is checked – When you are handing your car over; ensure that the driver checks your vehicle and notes any damage. Always make sure you sign and agree any damage to your vehicle before leaving it.
7 Check your vehicle upon your return – Always check your vehicle on your return against the signed check sheet that was filled in upon your departure. It is vitally important to report any new damage at this point as once you have driven away you are less likely to be able to process a successful claim.
Meet and Greet parking is growing every day due to how convenient it is for the customer. Do not be put off by what you may have heard in the past, just follow the seven points above to ensure your vehicle is looked after in the correct way that will allow you to enjoy meet and greet parking the way it was intended, hassle free.

Europe’s Spas Pamper Guests with Sumptuous Views, Posh Accommodations and Signature Treatments Filed under:

Keeping up with the demand of consumers, spa services, like any other consumable good, continue to grown and change with the times. Here, according to the International SPA Association (ISPA), are several of the trends making headlines in 2008:
Feng Shui Your Gym
Forget stark lighting and full-length vanity mirrors. Hello waterfalls and fine art. Led by ambitious gym projects, more gym-goers will happily embrace the “Fend Shiu’d” gym. Projects such as Gwinganna in Austrailia and Clay in New York are prime examples of this trend, which reconfigures the gym environment as a place to not only tone the body, but also to elevate the mind and spirit.
Wellness
Wellness is sweeping the globe, supported by scientific breakthroughs and the realization that the medical industry has been based on a “sickness” model. With consumers desiring to be healthier, more vital, and youthful in appearance, alternative practices and an emphasis on nutrition are becoming important aspects of spa-going.
Forget the deprivation
Want to lose weight? Forge the deprivation long associated with detox programs and weight-loss boot camps. Instead, spa-goers are indulging themselves in high thread-count sheets, well-appointed rooms, spa treatments, and a nurturing environment as they live it up while detoxing and losing weight.
Spa Real Estate
With health-focused baby boomers entering the real estate market to downsize or purchase vacation homes, a continuing trend for 2008 is a growing number of mixed-use developments with a strong spa focus. From spas adding residences, to developers adding spas, to hotels/resorts with spas adding condo units, the spa real estate mania is on.
Taking Sleep Seriously
Recent medical studies stress the importance of sleep for improved productivity at work, cardiovascular health, and even weight loss. In 2008, look for more hotel spas to bring in sleep directors, more destination spas to offer “snoozing zones” and massage scheduling that allows the therapist to say, “Stay on the table as long as you like” (finally!)
Hydro and Thermal Super-Experiences
Europe has long been known for its elaborate “sauna worlds” where guests can experience a Balinese mutli-steam bath, Finnish Sauna, Greek Herbal Bath, Indian Blosom Steam Room, Japanese Salt Steam Bath, Turkish Hammam, and a Zen garden – all in one place. America’s newest high-profile resort and day spas, guests are starting to be treated to more than just a steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi.
Branded
Brands such as Armani and Versace, known for their chic designs, are opening over-the-top spas around the world. Guests can indulge at the first Armani-branded spa in Tokyo, Versace Group’s spa at its Austrailian resort, and Prada Beauty’s line exclusively at Ritz-Carlton properties.
The Next Generation of Spa-goer
Always trendsetters, teens are making their presence felt in the spa industry. Nearly four million have been to a spa where they learn how to deal with stress, eat nutritiously, and care for their skin. Thirty-four percent of spas offer teen packages and 16 percent have teen programs.
Spa Lifestyle=Healthy Lifestyle
Working to educate spa-goers, spas are teaching the basics that lead to a healthy lifestyle: eating nutritious food, exercising and relieving stress. In the U.S., 51 percent offer educational programs and nutritional consultations, 40 percent offer healthy eating classes, 26 percent have educational offerings on obesity and weight-gain issues, and 17 percent offer exercise programs for children and teens.
Plugged In for Time Out
As stress relieving a spa treatment is supposed to be, some people still need to be plugged in to take time out. Spas are incorporating technology such as WiFi in relaxation rooms. They are also developing treatments that combine biofeedback technology, guidance from wellness professionals, and light therapy to those suffering from depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and insomnia.
Growing Green
A full 76 percent of U.S. spas say they’re applying environmentally sustainable practices, such as using green building tactics, planting organic gardens, using products made from locally-grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and plants, or selling mineral essential makeup.
Geologix Inc. manufactures products using a proprietary formula featuring 34 natural minerals contained in the ancient sea water from the famous Michigan Basin — a concentration of minerals higher than that found in any known body of water in the world. Mineral Essentials focuses on spa, skin care, and massage products to moisturize and provide anti-aging protection for great skin. Mineral Essentials

Tips For Planning A Great Family Vacation |
Traveling is a great experience for people of all ages. But, one of the best ways to travel is with your family. As a parent, taking your children to new and exciting places is a great way to expand their knowledge and to help them get a better idea of the world in general.
Picking a Destination
There are literally thousands of different destinations to choose from when planning a family vacation. Although most people think of Disney World when they think of family getaways, there are many other great options available. Of course, Disney is sure to be a winner. But, if your budget isn’t big enough for Disney or if you simply want to go somewhere a bit different, you have many options available to you.
One great place to start is with the National Park system. There are dozens of National Parks to select from, with each being beautiful and unique in its own way. In addition, many national parks are surrounded by other great attractions that can make your family vacation complete. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, for example, offers scenic splendor as well as many fun museums and other sites in nearby towns.
Planning an Itinerary
When planning an itinerary for a family vacation, it is a good idea to have a basic schedule of what you would like to see and do. At the same time, you need to be flexible. When traveling with children, things can occur that you did not expect. If you are not flexible, these things can really put a damper on your vacation. Therefore, you need to enter the vacation with an open mind.
It is also a good idea to involve the entire family in the planning process. This way, you will be certain to hit the destinations that your family enjoys and you will have a better chance of keeping everyone happy.
Getting Prepared for the Trip
Once you have decided where you are going, how you are getting there, and what you will be doing, you need to get prepared for the trip. Depending on where you are going, you might want to do a few background activities to help the children better understand what you will be seeing and doing. For example, if you are visiting Yellowstone National Park, you might want to help them get a better understanding of geysers and you want to prepare them for how to stay safe in a national park.
Want to take an exciting family vacation camping? Make sure you get the camping gear you need, including a survival knife.

Budget Travel Tips: Eight Simple Ways To Stretch Your Vacation Budget Filed under:

|
Budget travel has become a necessity for most people with the cost of gasoline and other consumer products on the rise. But when we start considering when, where, how and what type of vacation to undertake, we sometimes get caught up in the anticipation and excitement of the upcoming trip and let the more important financial side of things slip a little. After all, for most of us, taking a vacation may only happen once a year and for some, even more infrequently, so we tend to indulge and forget about our pocket book a little.
There are many ways to save money, avoid unnecessary cost, ensure you take care of details end up a smart and perceptive traveler. Travel planning is easier that you might think and here are eight great budget travel tips for making your travel dollar go further!
1. Cushion your budget – When considering a trip or planning budget travel, it is important to plan for the unexpected and consider the financial side of things early on. This ensures affordability, liquidity and having the resources to enjoy it to the fullest! Plan for the worst-case financial scenario and prepare for things to cost a little more than you expected. Allow up to 20% increase in cost to be on the safe side of things.
2. Emergency money: Carrying some spare cash somewhere can also be a lifesaver. The rule of thumb seems to be around $50-$100 in small bills. This can be used for incidentals, ground-transportation like cab fare and/or your return home, tips and more.
3. Set your priorities: Set some budget travel spending priorities and criteria in advance, like eating at a special restaurant or attending a concert, even if this means sacrificing a bit on lodgings or visa versa, depending on what is more important to you.
4. Keep an eye on your credit cards: It is extremely easy these days to have access to your financial resources through ATM’s and credit cards. Just remember that it is just as easy to overspend because of it being so readily available. A little discipline will go a long way to protect your financial interest and help you stick to your travel budget.
5. Maximize gas mileage and efficiency: If you’re planning a road trip, make sure that your car has been serviced at least a week before your trip. A well-maintained vehicle will go a long way to ensure carefree driving. If your budget allows, you may consider renting a vehicle to save wear and tear on your own. Small economy cars are better on gas and are much more comfortable than they used to be. Minivans and sport utility vehicles are practical only if you have to transport a large family with a lot of equipment or luggage.
6. Gas fill-ups: For filling up your car en route, avoid pushing to the limit until the gas runs out. Gas will obviously be more expensive when filling up in remote locations. If you miscalculated and the light on the dashboard indicates that you are really in need, opt for filling just half a tank until you reach the next more densely or major populated destination, where gas might be a little cheaper.
7. Pack-a-snack: Bring your own refreshments and snacks. Gas station prices on drinks and snack food are high. Avoid these during a pit stop, if you are counting your budget travel dollars. A cooler packed with lots of cool drinks, water and ice and/or a thermos of coffee or hot water for tea, some fruit, granola bars, or a sandwich, goes a long way to still the hunger and save you money by avoiding all high priced stops en route.
8. Travel necessities: It is advisable to travel with basic necessities, like a cell phone and a first aid kit, since both can prove to be essential in emergencies. Most people have cell phones at their disposal, but in the event that you are not one of them, a prepaid cell phone may be the answer for your trip. The peace of mind it offers is worth the small investment. Cell phones can also save on hefty surcharges and higher long distance rates that hotels and resorts often charge.

Holden Beach vacations are becoming very popular these days. When families are faced with a choice about a vacation destination, it is either some amusement park, or a beach somewhere. The benefits of beach vacations are very evident, relaxation for adults who need time

There are thousands of beaches and beach resorts around the world, and hundreds right here in our own back yard, the good old USA. The most popular beaches in the US are those of Southern California, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, etc. There are also lots of popular beaches stretching up the entire east coast, like Holden Beach of North Carolina.
Whatever destination you choose for your next beach vacation, you have lots of options and resorts to choose from. The nice thing is, for families, finances are usually tight. One of the very best ways to find information about a particular beach or resort is on the internet. There are hundreds of websites dedicated in delivering information about your desired destination right to your screen. One of my favorite destinations is Holden Beach. There are at least a dozen websites that have excellent information about places to stay, things to do, and things you need to see. You should definitely take the time to research before you make actual vacation plans.
When visiting a beach for vacation, you need to remember to pack everything that you might need. Why Visit Scottsdale, AZ and When Filed under:

There are a lot of things in Scottsdale, AZ which draw large numbers of tourists to the area every year.
The weather is one of the most well-known attractions. With more than 300 sunny days during the year, it’s no wonder that Scottsdale has earned the nickname “Sun Valley.” The culture and the atmosphere is also a popular draw. Indian festivals, southwestern food, the Rawhide Western Town, the Cowboy College and the Parada del Sol Rodeo all combine to maintain Scottsdale’s label as the “West’s most western town.”
Shoppers enjoy walking through shops on the twisting streets of the Old Town or visiting national chain stores at the Fashion Square Mall and golfers could spend months visiting the fifty or golf courses in Scottsdale.
Families can enjoy the parks, sports fields and fishing lakes on the Indian Wash Greenbelt or spend the day meeting wild animals at the Out of Africa Wildlife Park. Or a trip to the McCormick Stillman Railroad Park is also a great activity for groups with children.
Camelback Mountain, the Lower Salt River and the Sonoran Desert provide ample opportunities for biking, hiking, rock climbing and rafting as well. Photographers will also enjoy shooting pictures of red sandstone formations, desert flowers and huge saguaro cacti.
With so many attractions in Scottsdale, it has become an internationally renowned tourist spot and dozens of hotels and resorts have naturally been built to accommodate the visitors. A surprising number of these establishments offer suites in addition to basic hotel rooms. Before you book one or more Scottsdale Suites, there are a couple things you ought to know.
First of all, depending on the hotel you choose, these suites can range anywhere from 600 – 3,000 square feet in size. The price range also varies from place to place, but another factor that influences daily rates is actually the time of year you choose to visit. For example, the hottest months of the year (June-September) are also the cheapest. But, from January to April, when northern regions are affected by the cold and snow of winter, larger crowds move south to enjoy warmer weather. With the rise in demand during the winter, rooms become more expensive.
So, if you want to see all the attractions that Scottsdale has to offer and you want to stay in one, two, three or four-bedroom suites for a good price, I would recommend visiting the area during the months of June, July, August or September. Even though it shouldn’t be difficult, I would also recommend booking a hotel with one or more pools where you can cool off.
If you want to do research on several different hotels from one website, try visiting Scottsdale Luxury Suites (http://www.luxurysuites.com). Here you’ll find many different Scottsdale suites in a variety of sizes, styles and price ranges. The author, Art Gib, is a freelance writer.
