Did you know that last year alone, 20% of All holiday makers in the United Kingdom travelled alone? The market for individual holiday makers and travellers is now a very significant part of the travel industry, although often when you look about for good deals for single travellers you would be forgiven for thinking that the reverse was true.

Indeed, it is often the case that people going on holiday alone are penalised for their decision or circumstances, and end up having to pay supplements that leave their bill very little short of what it would have been had they gone on holiday with someone else. It is true, of course, that if 20% of holiday makers are travelling on their own, this means that the vast majority, 80%, are those travelling either as a couple or as a family or other group. Clearly hotels and other holiday accommodation need to cater for the majority of their customers, and so most hotel rooms are equipped with double beds.

A single individual booking a hotel room which has a double bed is effectively taking up two potential spaces that the hotel could have filled, and this could be considered as losing the hotel money. At busy times of the year it is highly probable that by letting a room out to someone staying on their own, they are losing a paying customer, since it is likely that they could just as easily have let the room out to a couple who would each have paid for the room. It isn’t just the room costs of course. The hotel will take into consideration that a couple are far more likely to buy drinks at the bar, eat in the restaurant and generally spend much more money than the individual. This represents a considerable loss, and so by charging a supplement for the individual traveller, they recoup at least part of this loss and make the blow a little less painful.

Despite this seeming to be a terribly unfair way of doing business, at the end of the day, it is exactly that – a business. Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking that hotels are purely there for our holidaying pleasure. They’re there to make money, end of story.

Of course, it is less painful for the hotel if a single traveller is using a double room, but not occupying this at the loss of a couple, since many rooms are vacant, and other customers won’t have to be turned away. In this way, choosing to stay at a time of year that is less popular for couples, such as holiday seasons, or special events, will decrease the chance, or at least the cost, of any such individual supplement.

If a hotel insists on charging you this extra fee, then look into the idea of getting something in return – possible a free upgrade, or breakfast thrown in? If they refuse to meet you part way on this, then it may be worth looking around and finding a hotel which is more amenable. It may well be that the hotel decides at that point that one paying guest is at least something, and offers you something in return.

Unfortunately, they are limited and so they book up fast. You will need to reserve a place well in advance if you want to stay in one. Hostals are not the same as hostels. Hostals are small, generally family-run, hotels with dorm rooms. They are cheaper than staying in a hotel, but are not as social for the backpacker as the hostels are. Albergues or pensions may have shared bathrooms unless you pay extra for a private one.

It is possible to find short term or long term holiday apartment rentals. This will suit a family or group of travelers. They offer more space and privacy than staying in a hotel. They are self-catered options and will give you a better feel of the city than in a hotel environment.

Even if you do a lot of travelling for business or leisure it’s still very easy to make some of the same mistakes each time you go on a trip. Reckless skiing is a real problem in some areas. Those disobeying the speed limit signs in Utah may face jail time and fines.

The speed limit was put in place in certain areas where less experienced skiers are trying to learn the sport. Reckless behaviors of others have caused 10 percent of all collisions in Park City and Deer Valley. A report in the Salt Lake City Tribune states that reckless skiing is now considered a Class B Misdemeanor.

Ski patrollers will be monitoring the slopes in search of people disobeying the speed limits or skiing recklessly. The ski patroller can now call the police, and the offenders may find themselves in court. If a reckless skier is called to court, the patroller will be called in as a witness to the incident. If skiers are found guilty of reckless skiing, they will be fined 1,000 USD and face a six-month jail sentence.

Some ski resorts in Europe are also adopting the ski speed limit, including Switzerland’s Grindelwald and Verbier. Pierre-Yves Deleze with the Verbier Tourist Office said, ‘The idea is to allow beginners to learn without people skiing by them too fast and frightening them.’

The problem isn’t simply fast skiers. Other reckless behaviour also endangers other skiers on the slopes.

‘We did it because that’s what people wanted’, said Susanne Daxelhoffer at the Grindelwald area tourist office. ‘The project is based on complaints of people skiing too fast and therefore fulfills a need’, Daxelhoffer added.

Swiss ski resort Grindelwald was the first European resort to introduce a speed limit on one of its slopes. A growing number of high-speed collisions on crowded slopes helped fuel the decision to implement the 30kmph speed limit. France reported several deaths in the 2006-2007 ski season due to high-speed collisions.

Resort owners hope to combat deaths and injuries by decreasing speeds on crowded and beginner slopes.

Richard Slater, a British skier and father of three told reporters, ‘It’s particularly good if you have young children and want them to be able to ski without being hit by out of control skiers going too fast.’

According to BBC News, a study of 24 resorts reveals that all are keeping an eye on the experimental speed limit enforcements.

Speed limits for skiers and snowboarders might soon become commonplace on slopes around the world. The resorts of Park City and Deer Valley, both in Utah, are the first to implement a fine and jail time. Grindelwald and other European resorts that are adopting the ski speed limit do not plan to fine offenders. There they are simply warned to slow down.

When the proper amount of care and respect are given, skiing in general is a relatively safe sport. Some members of staff and skiers at the affected resorts are torn. They can see the importance of safer skiing, but some feel the punishment far exceeds the crime.

Some skiers see the new law as a way for authorities to control what they do in their leisure time. These skiers feel the law imposes unfair restrictions on a fast-paced, thrilling sport.

Skiers on the other side of the fence believe the law will stop some skiers from recklessly skiing and putting others in harm’s way. This law gives less experienced skiers hope that they can safely enjoy their time on the slopes.

A Swiss insurance group is installing timers on certain slopes. These timers allow people to see their speeds and should encourage them to ski within set limits. Ski resorts world-wide hope the implementation of timers and patrollers will help make the slopes safer for more inexperienced skiers.

The Magic Kingdom was the first of Orlando’s Disney parks, constructed in 1971. Here you’ll find Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the seven dwarves, Peter Pan, Mr. Toad and his wild ride, Dumbo, the Little Mermaid, Winnie the Pooh, Mickey, Goofy and Pinnochio!

Parents feel transported back to their childhood, while children experience the magic of Disney. Unlike other amusement parks, at Disney World Orlando every single detail, be it a sign, a plant arrangement, a costumed cast member or music, has been agonized over to transform the illusion into a very real world.

Once guests pass through the Main Street “opening credits,” as the Disneyworld imagineers call them, Tomorrowland appears to the right. This part of the Magic Kingdom was designed to look like the future, as 1920s science fiction writers imagined it. Space Mountain, a fast-moving indoor rollercoaster, is by far the most popular attraction at Disney, as a whole.

Kids will love Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin that puts you right in the middle of an arcade game. Parents will marvel at one of the oldest Disney rides, the Carousel of Progress. Following the Magic Kingdom around, guests will enter Fantasyland. Your Disney vacation wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Cinderella’s castle! Inside her castle there are the family coat of arms and mosaic murals. The second floor houses Cinderella’s Royal Table restaurant but you’ll need a reservation to get a seat.

The Cinderella Suite is also on one of the upper floors of the 180 feet tall castle and is one of the most coveted prizes Disney has to offer. However, for the other guests, Fantasyland has many low-impact rides, suitable for young children. “It’s a Small World” is a popular ride here, as is the Mad Tea Party and Cinderella’s Golden Carousel. The Pinnochio Haus is a great place to grab double cheeseburgers and “Figaro” fries on the cheap!

The next Magic Kingdom land you’ll find yourself in is Liberty Square, home to the Hall of Presidents, the Liberty Square Riverboat and the extremely popular, and spooky, Haunted Mansion. The exterior of the Haunted Mansion was completed in 1963, but the imagineers couldn’t decide what to do with the interior until 1971, when it finally opened!

Inside this Gothic 18th Century Hudson River Valley manor, you’ll find 999 spectacular ghosts! The mansion is more “cool” than seriously terrifying, but you may not want to bring very young children all the same.

In Frontierland, you’ll find Splash Mountain, one of the best rides Disney has to offer! This is not your typical log flume ride. Once inside, you’ll move through the story of Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear with over 100 animatronics and you’ll experience a series of unexpected twists before taking the final 52 foot plunge into the thorny briar patch below. In this part of the Magic Kingdom, you may want to grab a turkey leg, stop in to the shooting gallery or watch the Country Bear Jamboree, where animatronic bears sing their country hearts out!

You’ll cross a wooden plank bridge and find yourself suddenly in Adventureland, a fun and diverse section of Magic Kingdom. Here you’ll find the Pirates of the Caribbean ride with incredible detail built into each animatronic pirate – including facial expressions, hairy legs and all.

Sing along, narrowly miss flying bullets, pass through jails and experience the marketplace with Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa. On the Jungle Cruise, you’ll tour four continents and see Cambodian tigers, headhunters, hippos, elephants, ancient temples and giant butterflies from your swampboat.

Disney resorts like the Contemporary and the Polynesian are located right next to the Magic Kingdom theme park. You can arrive at any theme park via the Contemporary resort’s monorail, which runs right through the building, making it the most convenient accommodation. However, the Polynesian has a really excellent “Spirit of Aloha” Dinner Show. These accommodations are some of the pricier resorts, averaging around $329/night.

The Magic Kingdom is home to several special events. First of all, the Disney Dream Come True parade passes by three times daily. There’s also a nightly Spectromagic parade, which never ceases to amaze with its fiber optics, neon lights and holograms.
