Spanish Vocabulary – What Makes It Unique? Filed under:

When you make up your mind that you want to learn Spanish, there are some basic words in the Spanish vocabulary that you will want to make sure you learn as well as remember. Every language has fundamental terms and phrases that furnish the foundation of the language, and if you are in a Spanish-speaking region, or a part of your city or town where Spanish is regularly spoken, these phrases or words will help you to practice your skills of Spanish, as well as give you additional incentive to learn more of the language.
Knowing The Basics
Hola. In the Spanish language, ‘hola’ means ‘hello’. Even if you are not that articulate in Spanish, make sure that you are courteous and are also able to speak to the people that are around you. This is an excellent way to break the ice, as well as to ask for assistance in speaking Spanish if you do not know all the various words to form a phrase. You might also discover that various native Spanish speakers do not talk in the English language, so you will be able to learn a great deal from each other.
Gracias. Saying thank you (Gracias) is an additional Spanish word you will need to know. If you are asking some questions (regardless if it’s spoken in broken Spanish) demonstrating your appreciation in the native language will certainly be well-received by those people who speak Spanish fluently.
And, if you are doing a favor or something else for somebody else and they convey their gratitude by saying ‘Gracias’, you can then answer by saying ‘de nada’ (you’re welcome) or ‘no hay de que’ (it’s nothing), so you can help to make native speakers feel more relaxed, and to exercise more of your Spanish vocabulary.
Beyond The Basics
Learning other Spanish words that suggest good manners, for instance ‘perdoname’ (excuse me), por favor (‘please’) and lo siento (‘I’m sorry’) will also assist you to find your way around if there are not a lot of people around who speak the English language. Keep in mind that, in any type of language, manners go a long way.
Donde esta…? If you are lost in a Spanish-speaking nation, and need to find your way to the closest restroom (bano), restaurant (restaurante), library (biblioteca), or movies (el cine), you will need to start your question with Donde esta (where is…?).
In the majority of cases, even individuals who do not speak the English language will be able to work out the place you are trying to get to if you start the conversation with this phrase. It may also be a wise idea to carry along a dictionary with you, so that you will have the ability to learn the words from the Spanish vocabulary used for city locations.

Travel On A Budget – Stay At Hostels Filed under:

You might think of hosteling as something that college students do while traveling through Europe for the summer. However, hosteling is not just for the college crowd anymore, and now includes people of all ages and backgrounds. If you are a traveler on a budget, staying at a hostel can be an adventure that will add to your travel experience.
Staying in a hostel will not be everyones cup of tea, and many travelers would prefer to spend the money on a traditional hotel. Hostel traveling is best suited to those traveling alone, or to young people traveling in groups. Hostels are not really recommended for families traveling with young children. In fact, many hostels do not accept children under a certain age.
Most hostels are set up like dormitory rooms, with several bunk beds arranged in the room, with anywhere from four to ten bunks per room. Each traveler is assigned a specific bed upon check-in.
Nearly all of the hostels in the United States group their accommodations according to gender, with the female guests in one section of rooms and the male guests in another. In multi-level hostels, males and females are often separated by floor.
It is not uncommon, however for European hostels (and those elsewhere around the world) to allow mixed genders to share a room. Make sure to ask about the policy of the hostel before you check in. I, as a woman traveling solo, have never encountered a problem with these arrangements, and I have stayed in hostels throughout Europe, including Rome, London and Amsterdam. Some visitors might be surprised or offended by these sleeping arrangements.
The bathroom accommodations at hostels differ also, with some rooms containing a shared bathroom and shower, while other hostels will have shower and bathroom facilities located in the hallway. If you would prefer not to share a bathroom with strangers, make sure you ask about the hostels policy ahead of time.
More often now, reservations are becoming increasingly vital at hostels, especially during the summer months in popular cities. It is now not at all unusual for hostels in popular tourist cities to be booked solid for months, where once it was common for travelers to be able drop by the hostel and expect to get a bed.
Price is by far the biggest appeal of staying at hostels. The nightly rate for a hostel is usually no higher than $25 or $30 per night, with most costing even less. With the average hotel room cost somewhere around $100 to $150 in many cities, it is easy to see why hostels are becoming such a popular alternative.
Another benefit of staying in a hostel is that the staff is extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about the local area. Unlike many staff members of some luxury hotels, who travel in from the outlying areas and rarely see the city in which they work, hostel staff tend to live in the city, and have an personal knowledge of the local sites, including which attractions are cannot miss and which ones are not worth the trip.
Hostels also usually have access to discounts and coupons for local area attractions and restaurants, and they can provide information on the best restaurants and hangouts around.
While not everyone will find a hostel appealing, and the accommodation of a local hostel are simple at best, they can be wonderful options for lodging for the budget minded traveler. After all, the goal of travel is to get out and see the world, and hostel travel lets you save money on lodging so that you can do just that.

Spain Goes Year Round For 2008 |
Travel internet sites in Europe have reported a surge of tourists heading for Spain and the Spanish islands for holidays and short breaks for the coming months – and this even extended earlier in the year to Spain’s ski areas.
Many people are surprised to learn that Spain has ski areas, but when looked at on a map the less well known tourist areas, away from the coastal regions, include the Pyrenees, bordering ski country Andorra.
Spain’s most successful ski resorts are in the Pyrenees, and they did well with tourists taking a ski holiday for the 2007/8 season with good snow from December through to April.
Another area of Spain good for ski holidays is the Sierra Nevada area, not far from the Costa del Sol, and despite the usually sunny climate of the Sierra Nevada, it has hosted the World Alpine Ski Championships.
Other popular ski holiday spots in Spain include:
* Baqueira-Beret
* Boi-Taull
* La Molina
* Astun
* Candanchu
* Cerler
* Formigal
* Panticosa
The most recent predictions of a great ski season for later this year and the 2008/9 ski holidays season are based mainly on Spain’s rise in tourism in the 2007 summer months.
Some popular holiday spots in Spain received as many as 560 per cent more tourists as the previous year. The Canary Island of Tenerife (176 per cent rise), Gran Canaria (244 per cent rise) and Lanzarote (120% rise) base most of their economic growth on tourism. Their dedication to holidaymakers has more than paid off.
Other areas of Spain that saw a significant rise in tourism include:
* Fuerteventura at 560 per cent
* Benidorm at 213 per cent
* The Malaga Province 329 per cent
The Algarve, Madeira, Marrakech and Sharm el Sheikh also report rises in tourism last summer and look forward to a good 2008 summer holidays season.
The Canary Islands are currently hosting the 24th Annual Music Festival of the Canaries. This additional boost in tourism will greatly benefit the tourism activities promoted on the Canary Islands.
A very popular holiday destination for Brits in the summer of 2007 was Menorca and sure to do well for 2008.
Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean, to the southeast of the Spanish mainland.
Menorca is well known as a smaller, much more private holiday spot than neighbouring Majorca. Majorca is much more densely populated than Menorca with many celebrities owning homes there such as Michael Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta Jones and Antonio Banderas.
Both Majorca and Menorca have a lot to offer their annual visitors. Where Majorca offers a bustling night life, white beaches and celebrities, Menorca provides more privacy, quiet coves and shaded areas.
No matter what time of year you plan your holiday, Spain has something to offer. Her islands offer summertime fun, diving, boating and other water sports. The Mediterranean is home to a whole new underwater world. Divers from around the world enjoy diving off Menorca, Majorca and the Canary Islands. Many of the island resorts offer fun for the entire family and special organised kids’ fun clubs during the day.
Due to Spain having the second highest altitude in Europe, more and more tourists see the country as the perfect holiday destination for those who enjoy winter sports such as skiing or snowboarding as well as the traditional summer holidays time. With a a wide selection of ski resorts in the Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada and the Cantabrian Mountains Spain could see her tourism numbers still further in the years ahead.

Book Your Accommodation In Rome In Advance |
As such, it has a large variety of accommodation options available for those who are visiting the city.
There are a variety of different quality hotels that are available. You can find anything from a luxury hotel to a bargain budget hotel room. The budget hotels may require you to pay extra for a private bathroom otherwise you will need to share. If you have a shared bathroom, the room may not include their buffet breakfast. It is worthwhile to check all of these facts and to consider paying extra for the bathroom and breakfast. The cheaper, budget hotels can often be found in the area surrounding Termini station. This makes them highly accessible and convenient. You may find that they offer special deals so ask about this when you book. They may also give you a discount if you pay in cash.
If you are looking for a luxury hotel, head for the area of Via Veneto. Here you will find many grand and glamorous hotels. The area around the Aventine or a classy hotel near Villa Borghese Park will provide you with a peaceful and comfortable stay in Rome. You can stay at a camping site although these tend to be further out of the city and are not convenient if you want to spend a lot of time visiting the attractions within the city itself.
You can find holiday apartments for rent in Rome. These can be found over the Internet or through agencies. They are generally a good option for larger groups (such as families) who would like a bit more privacy and freedom than you can find in a hotel. They also provide the opportunity to feel like you are living in a Roman home. They generally have all the self catering amenities such as a kitchen and terrace. Villas are also available. A more recent addition to the hotel accommodation options in Rome, are bed and breakfasts. These are as simple as people opening their homes and renting out a spare room. These will be much cheaper accommodation options than hotels. You can also find a vast number of Roman hostels which are also a good budget option for visitors to the city.
An interesting form of holiday accommodation that you can find in Rome that is not available in other cities is convents. There are a number of convents in Rome that put up paying guests. The convents are strongly Catholic. Some of them will only accept Catholic guests who book their accommodation through their church, but most will accept guests of any religion as long as they are happy to stay in such a Catholic environment. The amenities are generally fairly simple, but they are well priced and generally a peaceful place to stay. They are also a good choice for a budget traveler, but they may not suit the backpacker as they generally have curfews of around 11pm.

Travel Providers Strive to Meet the Needs of Disabled Travelers |
For people with disabilities, the world of travel is broadening its scope to welcome and encourage those who, although physically challenged, are not being hindered by their disabilities. The U.S. Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) of 1986 prohibits airlines from discriminating on the basis on disability and affects accessibility features in terminals and aboard aircraft operated by U.S. and foreign airlines operating to, from and in the United States.
More than ever, travel providers are seeking ways to meet the needs of travelers with disabilities. Recently, Detroit’s Northwest Airlines, Wayne County Airport Authority and Checker Sedan, the official luxury sedan service of Detroit Metro Airport, completed training sessions with staff from Leader Dogs for the Blind of Rochester. The group met specifically to learn how to meet the special needs of the blind and disabled when they’re traveling.
“The Wayne County Airport Authority is totally in support of the efforts of Leader Dogs for the Blind to help our contractors and tenants – airlines and ground transportation providers – to be aware of the needs of the disabled,” said Michael Conway, public affairs specialist at the airport. Positions, such as sky caps, who provide a high level of customer service and assist travelers, play key roles in helping travelers with disabilities reach their gates on time or receive the assistance they require.
Checker Sedan, which provides luxury sedan transportation at Detroit Metro, participated in the daylong session. The transportation provider has two converted vans with a portable ramp and wheelchair tie downs that can accommodate those who use power wheelchairs or wheelchairs that don’t fold and won’t fit in a vehicle’s trunk.
“Our hope is that we can train these companies so they can be aware of what they are doing,” Stafford said, “It’s not hard at all to provide service to a disabled passenger; it’s just a matter of information.”
Some examples of disability etiquette include:
- Talk to the person, not to the person he or she is with.
- Call a person by name, not by a disability.
- Ask a disabled person if he or she needs help and how.
- Don’t put a blind person in a wheelchair just “because it makes it easier for you to help them.”
- Do not talk more loudly to blind people; their hearing is not impaired.
“Basically, you treat a person with a disability with respect and dignity as you would any other customer,” said Stafford.
The hope is that a little basic information provided by Leader Dogs will go a long way. Travel providers usually find that travelers with disabilities appreciate the efforts of airports and companies who are familiar with the most beneficial ways to assist disabled passengers, if necessary. Those improvements not only make things better for disabled people, but can actually improve service for anyone.

Coronado, Panamas First Beach Town |
Coronado rose up as Panamas first developed beach town. It is located about forty five minutes to the West of Panama city, via the InterAmercian Highway which is one of the best in Central America when it comes to quality.
Coronados entrance is marked by several shopping malls with a subway sandwich shop, various stores and an unusual grocery store called El Rey, which would not be out of its place in any developed American city.
Coronados beach is as nice as the beach in Santa Clara. The water in the beach of Coronado is however not that friendly because it has high rising tides and raving currents which could be fatal. Most of the coastal areas around the beach are used for real estate developments. Tall condo buildings are also dotted on the shores of Coronado these days.
The single family homes in Coronado vary from sizes and quality; you can get one from a very low end to even a super deluxe. There are several private mansions as well which are luxurious but unfortunately a very few of them are for rent or sale. The roads near the beach are well maintained.
Real estate in Coronado is a bit expensive compared to any other beach area in Panama. This is because it will be a hot spot in the near future. But many people feel that by constructing various new similar looking condo towers, Coronado has a chance to prosper even more. The market advantage of low supply in the area caused most of the real estate developments in Coronado to prosper. Several hotels are being built to delight the foreign visitors as well.
The entrance of Coronado is guarded by a few securities and visitors have to check in while the residents can just swipe through. The guards are friendly and not choosy to avoid any sort of discrimination.
Coronado is still a home for lots of fisherman who trade on the beach area. As a residence of the place, you can easily purchase fresh lobsters and sea bass directly from the source. Even some of the local restaurants and hotels acquire fish this way and cater to the upper classes. Punta Barco and Punta Barco Autentico is Coronados closest neighbor to the west. You can also discover poor farmers and vendors selling small bags of beans for as less as fifty cents on the highway. Coronado is also known for its weekend trips as well as a nearby tourist attraction.
On many occasions and holidays, the locals and the foreigners chill with beers in the streets and relax on the Coronado beach. They also enjoy poolside barbeques and spend quality time on the beach. You can also enjoy the outstanding views from the towers; the front has to offer beautiful ocean views while the rear has the jungle.
To summarize, Coronado is a good spot for investment as well as a good travel destination. The infrastructure is much developed compared to any other beach towns in the nation. Panamanian makes up a good portion of the local residents. Most foreigners consider it as a developed beach town. The best part is that even if you do not like it, you will not regret as you do not require much time reaching it.
If you are a real estate investor, you can benefit by investing in this place as there is a terrific opportunity to purchase at a low price and sell high in future. It is said that certain projects such as Coronado Country Club often sell out most of their units before any construction took place!

Advisory Notes For Those Hiring A Car Filed under:
Travel, Travelling Tips on

|
Once you have decided to hire a car there is a variety of considerations that must be taken into account. If travelling by air, often a hire car can be the best way to get to your destination in comfort and with great levels of privacy. Most car hire companies today have desks at major airports making the transition from plane to car that much simpler. Car hire can be expensive though, thankfully with frugal planning and some research it is possible to get a great bargain without compromising on service.
If you travel regularly with a particular airline and are part of their frequent fliers programme it may be possible to receive brilliant rates as part of your air travel costs. A lot of air companies can offer their regular customers discounts for car hire services. So before you book, make sure to check with your airline to see if any discounts do exist, with so may companies now having affiliate offers with other corporations a great deal can be snaffled.
As with much of the modern world, when researching car hire the internet is the perfect place to start as many major companies have online booking services. The online booking solutions offered by car hire businesses often include discounts as the need for phone operators is negated. The prices can vary greatly for booking over the internet, with some companies the discounts can be as much as ten percent.
Before hiring, it is always advisable to check and read the hire contract carefully. Part of this is finding out the insurance coverage you will receive as part of the basic package. Naturally, you will want to check the liability and research where the responsibility lays should anything untoward occur. By doing this it is possible to cover yourself should any damage become apparent, if it means taking an extra insurance package form the hire company, this may be worth taking, a relatively small surcharge is preferable to a huge bill should wreck the car. Also, it is worth notifying the company if anyone other than yourself is going to drive the car, once again a surcharge may be applicable but as allowing another driver behind the wheel will most probably invalidate any protection you have, it is highly advisable.
If booking over the internet, make sure you take note of the conformation number, by doing this you have proof of your booking placing the responsibility of having a car ready firmly in the hands of the car hire company. For those wanting to save money, it is usually worth booking the smallest car in the range, it will not necessarily ruin your comfort, often getting an upgrade at the desk can cost less and is even free at times. Also if arriving by plane, make sure the car hire desk has your flight number, by doing this it is assured you car will be their at your arrival, even if you are delayed.
Before leaving the lot, make sure check over the car carefully. By making a detailed check it will be possible to highlight any dents or scrapes already present on the car. By alerting these problems to the representative and noting them, will ensure that when you return the vehicle you will not be stung with a bill for damage you have not caused. Added to this it is advisable to check the opening times of your particular hire company. while this may not be a problem at most airports, some smaller outlets may shut earlier, remember that if you do not return your car on time, an extra days hire may be charged, by ensuring they are open or provisions have been made for you to return the car after closing time you will be able to avoid these extra charges.
Hopefully this advice has given the traveller a better idea of how to hire a car and avoid the added fines that can be incurred. After all, the majority of us are looking for the best deal possible, so by researching comprehensively and comparing prices extensively, you should be able to bag a bargain.
